Recharge Your Batteries and an Announcement!
In Episode 6 of Teach With Your Hands, ceramist Kate Maury told me how participating in residency programs helps her generate new ideas and cultivate new perspectives. Residencies are typically longer programs—anywhere from 2 weeks to a year—designed to create a space for makers to focus exclusively on making for an extended period of time. Kate’s unique style has been influenced by trips she’s made to India, and the shrines and textiles she saw there.
Listening to her talk about it, I got caught daydreaming about magical, faraway places; the things I might see and the ideas and skills I might return with.
Unfortunately, taking a trip around the world is a little out of reach for me right now, as I’m sure it is for many of you. Luckily, there’s another option a little closer to home.
Workshops!
While the setting may not be quite as exotic, and the duration not quite as long, workshops are still a great way to charge your creative batteries through new experiences, skills, and connections with other makers. They provide an opportunity to take a break from the everyday and focus on making, even if just for a Saturday. And if you can find one in the same town or a nearby one, they’re easily within the reach of any dedicated artisan.
Here at Good City, we’re happy to announce that we’ve got a handful of woodworking and embroidery workshops planned for later this summer! We’re really excited about the topics and instructors, and can’t wait to tell you more. Hopefully in the next week or so we should have dates and prices finalized and a place where you can actually sign up! Stay tuned!
